Hearing Loss

What causes hearing loss?

The ear is a very complex organ and there are many reasons you can develop hearing loss, apart from the effects of age and excessive noise exposure.

NZ Independent Audiologists are trained to find the specific type of hearing loss you are experiencing.

You’ll also find that we take the time to discuss your results with you and answer any questions you may have. We’ll then explain the various solutions that may be available to you; and should you require it, we are qualified to refer you on for further investigation by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.

Some common causes of hearing loss are:

Natural Aging

As we get older, we may start to notice problems in situations where there are groups of people talking, or there is other background noise. This may be a result of hearing higher-pitched sounds less well. Often the person with hearing loss will feel that other people are mumbling and may comment that people don’t speak as clearly as they used to.

Noise Exposure

Excessively loud sounds can cause gradual damage to your hearing. This often occurs gradually in a work environment or can occur with a sudden very loud sound. It is also important to wear adequate hearing protection either by wearing ear plugs or ear muffs when you are going to be exposed to excessive noise.

Ear Infections

Infections in the outer or middle ear can cause hearing loss. Your audiologist can perform a full assessment and will then be able to advise on the best course of action.

Buildup of Earwax

Earwax is naturally produced in the ear canal. Some people produce excessive amounts of ear wax or have very narrow or hairy ear canals so the wax cannot migrate out of the ear canal normally. In these cases micro-suction to remove ear wax is recommended. Visit your audiologist to discuss your options.

Genetic Hearing Loss

Some hearing loss is genetic. It may appear randomly, or it may be inherited from parents or other family members, even skipping a generation. It is worth getting advice from an independent audiologist, who will be trained to recognise these hearing losses and advise you on the best course of action to treat them.
